Hi Nessie and welcome.

You have done a very courageous thing and persevered with improving the life of this tortoise, I am glad you didnt take the tortoise back to where you got it, the poor thing would almost definately been sold to another unsuspecting person who amy not have had the compassion and care you have given to this special tortoise who will never be perfect, as the MBD connot be reversed, but will be greatly improved with the correct care which it sounds like you are giving.

If you are going to get another tortoise there is no real problem but obviously dont house them together for some time, not just the quarentine issue but allow your forst tortoise to have a better 2nd chance.

You could be bringing on the newbie whilst you are building the other one up to better health.

Ade

Hi, I would just like to add to this post. I rehomed Harry, very severe mbd, last year. With a lot of love he has come on a huge amount. He could not walk very well (I call it the mbd shuffle) because of his deformities.

I was then fortunate enough to rehome a tort that had spent his 4 years in a tiny viv, George. Since they have been together they have encouraged each other alot. Harry follows George, thus buidling up his leg muscles & George has now become accustomed to open spaces - which he did not like at all when I first got him, from watching Harry.

All in all it was a worthwhile experience getting another tort and having him with Harry as the differences are plain to see. Both are thriving.

Just thought I would add my own personal experience with getting another tort to join one with mbd.

Hi Nessie,

You've got a lovely tortoise there, and I'm glad she's found a good home with you. Just one little thing: when I enlarge the first picture, it looks like you're feeding her on salad cress and cucumber. Water cress is fine for torts, but salad cress is actually rape seedlings and isn't so good; and cucumber is mostly water and has no nutrition at all - it'is OK once in a while in the summer to keep them hydrated, or to give medicine or extra calcium on, but not part of a staple diet. For good diet sheets try these sites:
