New Hermanns!
hi, i have got my first baby hermanns, which i bought today!
i thought was a year old, which it stated at the shop. but the certificate says hatched November 2008, so he/she is younger then i was told! my question is, how long do they sleep for? he has been in his house for about 5 hours now. he was up most of the day though, and had a nice bath earlier. should i be expecting him/her to be up bright and early tomorrow?? or still snoozing? thanks |

Your lucky your tortoise has been up and about:0) As new tortoises in a new home usually take a while before they come out. And longer to eat. The eating is not a problem (only for you) as tortoises can go a long time without eating. But dehydration is a bigger worry, so make sure you bathe your tortoise everyday.
Each tortoise is different, if you are lucky he/she will be up and about, but dont panic if they are not. It can take a while for them to ajust to a new home. He/she is young so will sleep more, as long as the eyes are clear and bright and the nose is dry, he/she should be fine.

Yeah, I was informed 2-3g a month! It's what I aim for!!
I have been recording their weights after a bath about twice a week (will go down as get used to amount to feed etc) and I have found that their weight fluctuates quite a bit! Herman was 178 at the vets the other day, and today he weighed 175!! Before I would have been worried, but a little poo can weigh 2g!! I found ths out when Patch poo'd on the scales - I tidy it off and found that she was 2g lighter!! Congrats on your new torts by the way!! |

Weighing a tortoise too regularly can give a distorted picture. You need to weigh once a month, and then a truer picture can be seen. Its 2-3 grms a month.
If you weigh yourself too often you get different weights.
