Default Which one.??

I love the look of the sulcata but want a tortoise a bit smaller than that but not too much smaller.

I will be a first time keeper.

I was told the best tortoise for uk and for personality and for beginners is a hermann tortoise but to be honest they are too small as adults and want something large enough not to lose.

If you like the way Sulcatas are kept, than you might want to think about a Leopard tortoise. Care is pretty much the same and they don't get anywhere near as big, but they do get big (over 12 inches under 24 inches with the average depending on sex between 12 and 18 inches).

Would they need heating outside when it's summer?

Depends on how the summer is, but would definately need some heating spring and fall. Of course heating over the winter also.

Yes, ideally a large heated shed.

our climate only allows for a few days/weeks when its hot enough for the African torts to be outside without heat, we've certainly only had a few days this year. In fact its been cold and wet enough for even the more hardy species such as hermans/ibera etc to have to be brought inside for a warm up if they don't have heat outside. Just think where they come from then you'll get an idea of what they like and compare it to what we sadly have, its why torts aren't found native in this country.

Red foots and yellow foots can get quite big not huge tho. You would need to over winter etc with them.

What do you mean over winter? Can they be kept indoors in winter with heating and outdoors in summer without heating?
