Tortoises living together?
Hi, are tortoises that are slightly different sizes ok to be kept together? only an inch or so difference? this might be a silly question but better safe than sorry

that would depend on the space they have, the smaller ones also need places they alone can hide in and possibly more than one feeding area so they get their proper share. I wouldn't put those that are enormous in with tiny's just in case they accidently squashed them, I think hatchlings in the wild might stay together for a while but doubt they'd meet many adults.

Thanks for the reply I have a tort who is around 2 inches and have found another possible one to go with him/her that is around 3 inches, I have a large table with a hide for sleeping at one end and two tunnel sort of hides in the enclosure, I only have one feeding place but I can easily add another, do people think this will be ok or should I continue looking until I find one of a similar size? thanks

I'm sorry I thought you meant you already had more than one tort ie siblings, if you buy another you will need to keep it separate or quarantine for at least 6 months before putting them together. You also have to consider that you can't sex a young tort so run a very strong risk that you could end up with a male and female which couldn't be kept together as the male could pester the female to much. You might also end up with two males that don't get on, whatever you decide you will need two set ups to start with and maybe two on a more permanent basis later on. Your single tort won't be feeling lonely that is a human emotion so the buying of another has to be for other reasons, if you want to eventually breed you'd be better waitng untill you know the sex of yours and get an older tort of the sex you want.

It is important that you have the space for another table should two tortoises not get along, plus the fact that as has been said the new one should be quarantined before they live together.

Don't forget that its not advisable to keep different species of tort together.
