Can I shorten wind down?

If you are in any doubt then get them up, mine to scratch around a bit but they can change positions in their box throuought the whole hibernation, one year I heard scratching in the fridge and looked, and it was one of my torts head poking out she had lifted the lid and was wide awake, so I got her up x

Scratching around usually means the temps are not cold enough. They move up when temps are warmer, and down when its colder. The scratching is usually when they are at the bottom and clawing at the box.

Also despite what people think tortoises sleep the same whether they are warm or cold. That's why tortoises (all reptiles) don't hibernate but bruminate. They just get to cold to eat and be active. They still move, just more slowly. So movement and eyes open during brumination is no problem as long as your temperatures are around 5C.

My fridge is now staying at 7.4 looked at torts they seem still now they had scratched the boxes they are in still not sure if I should wake them up is that temp still to high ant get it lower Thankyou for any info x

Thanks for that, found it very interesting I spent an hour researching the differences while I was meant to be working today lol

Very few animals actually hibernate (which is a long sleep without any activity). Bears don't technically hibernate as they give birth during the winter. Basicly only ground squirrels and bats hibernate.
