I look forward to seeing a photo of Willy sometime. 60 years old!

You have received lots of good advice. All I will say , it is amazing how cold it can be when there isn't even a frost, so thermometers are so useful.

Hi, me again! It's coming round to that time of year again! Another question! Willy' previous owners used straw in his hutch, I have been used aspen. What's the best thing for him to hibernate - was thinking sterilized top soil?

What you should not use is anything that can hold the damp. As mould can grow and thats bad for tortoises.
I used to use shredded paper around my tortoises.
I used to put them in an
A4 paper box with shredded paper.
Then put the A4 box inside a large polystyrene box (the type tropcial fish are transported in) with shredded newspaper around the A4 box.
Then kept it in the garage which is attached to the house. And monitored the temps in there.

Hi all, Willy came out of hibernation about 10 days ago. I have given him a few good soaks but he has no interest in eating and just seems really lethargic. Looking for some advice please as I don't really want to stress him out by taking him to the vet unless I need to.

PS the weather has been very wet since he woke up.

Hi Sally

have you got any artificial heat / light for Willy?

If it's not possible he's likely to stay lethargic until the weather improves.

No I haven't. He has always been outside. Do you think I ought to bring him inside?

He needs heat to help warm him through. So bringing him in until he has warmed up and eating is a good idea. You can use an ordinary lamp to warm him up:0)

Agree with the others, as soon as torts wake up, you must get them under a heat lamp, they are cold blooded and to have to bask to warm their bodies up and be able to move , eat, and for their digestion to function.
