If you are having the temps we are (26c) then your tortoise will hide away, all of mine are. Its too hot.
And just because your tortoise is hiding away does not mean he will die. They just dont like change. Provided he has a dry nose, clear bright eyes and not gaping, its just a matter of their time. And they can be frustating:0)

We all stress about our tortoises even me after over 35yrs of keeping them.
First thing I do when I get home is check on them, even if its only an hour gone:0)
Watching them closely will only improve your keeping, and we never know it all. We are all still learning.

I agree, and it can takes weeks and weeks for a tortoise to adjust to change.
Be patient , keep him well hydrated with plenty of baths, and to be honest right now it's too hot for any tortoise to be particularly active, mine are eating first thing and hiding away until late afternoon , then coming out again. So he's now got to cope with adjusting to change and the heat, give him time and try not to worry.
