Humid hides
I have a humid hide in my hatchlings enclosure so there is an area of high humidity and I also spray their enclosure 2-3 times a day and I'm happy with their growth.
My question is, should this be provided for all torts that are still growing, even larger ones? Or is there not much benefit after a certain age? The reason I ask is Maggie who had pyrimiding when I got her in May has grown over 1.5cm in length, never seen the new growth between the scutes but their is no flat growth inbetween there either. She has been kept and supplemented the same as my others. If any of you have humid hides for larger growing torts what do you use? It would have to be large enough to accomadate Humphrey who is 25cm and 2.54kg and fitted in such a way that she couldn't move it. Any ideas? |

I don't think it's as important for the larger ones though if they have the option to go somewhere that you've provided higher humidity then it's up to them if they want it.

Thanks for the reply Paul, I guess I'm trying to work out why she's growing different to the others, maybe its not been long enough since i've had her to notice a difference.

growth is much more noticable when they are little. Not so much as they get larger. Like kids and people in general, each one grows differently.

What's the best way to create a humid hide for hatchlings?

Most do it by attaching a sponge to the top of something suitable, and then keeping the sponge moist.
The hide should be high enough so the sponge is not in direct contact with the tortoises, as I've read reports that it may have caused shell rot when this is the case. |

Apologies to Ozric Jonathan for ripping off an article of interest he put forward but this is a link to an article on creating a natural humid hide using plants and soil. I'm hoping to give it a go in the new year.
