Argh...heating question
Alfreds table has been kept at mid 30's in the warm end and mid 20's at the cooler end. I use a 160w uv/basking light. But now struggling to keep his temperatures in the 30's at the warm end because our central heating has died on us, at night the temp is dropping to about 10 degrees which is probably ok because he is buried in his hide. Is this ok and should I go and buy a heat mat just in case the temps drop further or should I lower his light a teeny bit? Alfred seems ok with it at the moment though. We wont have any heating or hot water until Jan at the earliest now.
Sorry for panicking and Merry Christmas xx

If you can lower his light and still keep it at the safe minimum distance i would try that

I am sorry to hear about the heating problem A lot of people, myself included, use a ceramic heat emitter to keep the temps up at night, they can be used during the day as well. These heat emitters give off infrared heat but not light so they won't disturb your torts sleep. They are relatively inexpensive but you would also need a thermostat, such as a habistat to control the temperatures and these are a bit more expensive (about £40ish I think? I got mine cheap from Ebay). If you need them in a hurry you should be able to find them in a reptile shop, they are great at keeping the temps up in winter!

I have used Ceramic's for extra heat, heat Mat's will also do a job for winter both best used on a thermostat.

I use a heat mat under the sleeping area and providing you have torts that don't dig like my hatchlings they work very well, there is bark over the area and when sprayed it will stay humid for far longer than the open areas. You do need a big table as there must still be the cooler areas but torts can stay warm with heat from below them and mine are far more active in the mornings because they don't get so cold at night.
