Sterilised top soil (I buy mine from Wickes) or coco coir. Some people use a combination of the two.

I currently use coco coir only because it's an easy pack to store, I find it less dusty and there's no earthy smell when the lights are on it.
I've nothing against top soil as such and use that outdoors but they are my reasons for favouring the coir xx

I now use coco coir. I found top soil dried out and became dusty very quickly.....it was also very heavy. Since the change I have discovered I do not have to water as often x x x xhugs x x x
