I use straw in the hides indoors and its insulating and helps to keep them warm, digging species need substrate to dig into so soil is a good one x

straw and hay are fine as long as they are good quality and not full of dust and also that it is removed when wet as it can go mouldy very quicky

Westlands Top Soil is used widely, and is great for my Horsefields. It is only £3 at most Garden Centres!
