Hi Sarah,

Just out of interest what does Protazoa looks like under the microscope?

The one protozoa that I'm concerned about is any kind of ameoba and they are very difficult to both detect and treat but I found that the precautionary treatment is sometimes warranted.

Flagellets, another type of protozoa is easier to detect at 400x magnification by appearing as a transparant or translucent 'whirly bug' (type of water bug)(for lack of a better description)

This is a fascinating field which can drive you nuts if you are not careful. If you do get a microscope do many fecals on as many tortoises as you can so you have an idea what 'normal' is. You also have to learn what is a parasite and what is other stuff like bug parts and plant material which the tortoise might ingest.

It has just been brought to my attention by a friend that a fantastic (inexpensive) book has been redone which is now available. This is a must for anyone interested in delving into this topic.
