Default help with i.d please

Hi there

I am looking to identify these two tortoises. The male (Tim) has been in my wife's family for 35 years and the female Yasmin is the daughter of Tim, one of 4 sisters 2 of which have come to live with us. Yasmin is 26 years old.

They have been relocated to our garden after the in-laws new Labrador puppy decided they were to become his chew toys. They have a few minor injuries to their shells, nothing serious thankfully and have healed well.

We also have a 3 year old born to them, who has a slighly deformed mouth and was incubated in an airing cupboard. In addition two were born last year but only one survived and currently lives with Niki's sister.

The only history I know is that Tim was one of the last to be imported into the islands before importing was banned. I believe he was bought from a guy in a pub... 35ish years ago lol.

They are great pets, each with their own unique character and my kids love em. Joe ( the 3 year old) chases my daughter and my baby boy around the garden.. very funny to watch. They are a permanant part of the family now and i am trying to find out as much as i can about them.

Any help you could give be about the I.D ofd them would be much appreciated.

This is Tim

and this is Yasmin

Again any help would be much appreciated

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,
They are both T.g.ibera. You might though need to find a different male for the daughters as the line breeding seems to be causing some problems with the hatchlings.

I'm curious as to what line breeding? There are 2 WC tortoises... one baby. Even to cross it back should not present a problem.

thanks for your help. I havent taken any notice of these guys until they arrived on my door step 2 month ago. Before that they were just walking rocks i tripped over once in a while when taking the kids up to see their gran. They have been together for the last 28 years. My neighbour has a male tortoise that looks the same as our male and we have been putting the females over there with him to try break the line.

The tortoise that lives with the sister is in good health, so we put the deformity down to airing cupboard incubation. I ordered a Herp Nursery2 the other night for future use

I must be misunderstanding... I believe that line breeding is when parent is bred to offspring and the other way around... I don't see that here.

Tim is a WC tortoise, Yasmin is a daughter of Tim's. There must have been a female that came in with Tim and was the mother of Yasmin.
They have bred the daughter (Yasmin) back to her father (Tim).

That's why you're the expert Danny...

I missed that point.

It is still hardly 'line breeding'.

5 or 6 generations... might produce a fault.

The deformed mouth... maybe... the hatchling dying... no... but you can't attibute it to the parents unless they were siblings and even then it's a stretch.
