lighting query
Hello everyone
was wondering when tortoise goes into his hide do you turn his light off, as mine can sometimes go into his hide really early and never comes back out until next morning. Just seems a waste to have it on if little tort is not using it. |

My babies often go to bed by 4pm and yes I turn the lights off, there is still light in the room , so no problem.

Would you turn it off even if they go to bed before 12?

Ooohhhh no definitely not, that's a whole different thing. If they are going to bed that early and not getting up again, check the temps under the basking light, I wouldn't have it more than 31/32 and not lower than 28/29 , you see it could be too hot so they're seeking a cool place or too cool so they become inactive. So start by checking the temps. And see what happens.

I sometimes only turn mine on from 9 - 13.00hrs (opps soz 1 ish). And never ever after 21.00hrs , 9 ish as I think of the wild....temp drops and off to bed by 15.00hrs most of mine, even if suns out...too hot, too dry and too sleepy sometimes. Yes agree with Suze see what happens if less warmth or lights otherwise they aestivate. Good luck ! CB

I may be way off base here hoppysara but I think with a Horsfield 30 is still a little high. They are so rufty tufty mine have never been under a lamp and are manic between 15 - 25 in summer. hotter than that they aestivate and I don't see them for days on end. its up to you but I would just try dropping it a little more and see if more active. There is absolutely nothing wrong with 30 - 32 odd but even my little Egyptian is 26 -29 and cool end 20 odd. overnight 16. If you read Tortoise Trust web site on Egyptians that's the ideal and I know Bristol Zoo keeps them at that and they are Egyptian 'I love the heat' Klenmanni tortoise ...I think all you've done is fine though. picky time !! Beatrice is slow to get up, goes back to bed after a couple of hours, seems to have a rest for a couple of hours and get up again. Bertie stays up all day - first up and last to bed.
Beatrice does not like it too hot and Bertie will lie in the sun most of the day - or under the lamp when they were in. Not sure if this helps.
