Horsfields don't tend to fare well on the 'ol' ratio's sometimes due to their shape, and it is only a guide of course.

Welcome Jan W, Bertie and Beatrice are a grande old weight how super. you must post some pickies when get a chance we would all love to see them both CB

Default Horsfield weights

Thank you CherryBrandy! What a great name, I will need to come up with something more exciting!

I love the picks you posted of Bath Run Time - so cute.

I think I have to place so many posts before I can upload pictures. So will take some tomorrow in preparation when they have their bath, as we are starting wind down.

Hi...first time poster here! I found this thread soooo interesting. My new tortoise was handed to me month ago..somebody didn't want her and local vet who it was handed to couldn't keep him neither. So here we are...so far so good. He is named Putin..and has truly earned the name too...

Welcome! I only joined last month and it is a great site. I thought I knew quite a bit but there is nothing like hearing experiences.
Good luck

The McIntyre ratio was designed specifically for horsfields.
I would say both your tortoises are over weight for their ages. And for horsfields in general. There are a couple of subspecies that can get that big, but only once fully grown.
So both would be fine for hibernation:0)
Provided they are in good health.

Hi Sandy
I think you are referring to my tortoises?
They seem very healthy and finally winding down for hibernation. A couple degrees change in temperature has made a difference.
I will keep a very close eye on them and their weight. I think I have spent too much time finding weeds and flowers for them!
Thank you
Jan

I think always a difficult one when torts are out grazing naturally anyway, some of my Horsfields are over 1200grammes, others 800 odd, but they are little piggies as Horsfields are. I don't tend to restrict food and they have all grown at different rates . lovely shells and growth as far as I can see and healthy which is the biggy. One of my spur mows the lawn others don't. CB

Thanks again!. I have been telling my husband we may have obese tortoises and his response was "I'm not surprised you are always fussing over them and ensuring they have heaps of food"! Bertie had a bumpy shell when he arrived (smaller one) and this has gradually smoothed out, Beatrice is actually a better rounded shape, with perhaps a little rise then depression at one section at the front. I'm sure there is a proper term for this part of the shell.....

Jan I have that with one of mine dipped at the front - at least I can tell her apart easily! yes Horsfields are well piggy. tbh if they are healthy and happy that's all that counts. I'll post a picky under pictures if I get a chance! CB

Thank you will look forward to the picture. I need to work out how to post mine. I took a photo of them in the bath a few weeks ago, so must try again.
