OMG! I read your post with my jaw hanging! I cannot believe that the seller claimed to love this tort and know anything about how to care or him!!!
Thank god you have rescued him!!! It will be a long and windy road with the tort i bet, but hopefully with your care and attention, he will improve drastically!

You really deserve a medal, not only for what youve done for the little guy but also for keeping your temper while you were there, I certainly couldnt of done!
I wish you all the best luck and hope all goes well with the tort and your baby! Congratulations!

well done you!, i would take him to the vet, you may be able to get help with his bills, dont know what it is like in the states, but in the uk, you can apply to a animal welfare group for help, some vets will even help if its a rescue case, why not ask your vets for help, all animals are entitle to some free vets treatment if suffering

dont be too hard on the last owners, there are many whom would have just thrown it away, at least they give it up and did make some attempt to find it a good home, they could have done a lot worst

i hate to sound awful, but if you cant afford the vets bill or cant make arrangements to defere, you make find it better to pass it over to a rescue, at least you would have played a part in saving it

Oh my god how horrible

Looks like tortoise has been diving in the tub of water then once wet running around the enclosure and dirt had stuck to him, any normal owner would clean him up. But looks like this has been going on for ages and its just built up.

What i would do:

If there are any lose bit of sheel remove them, if they are still attached leave them, but if they crumble away remove them, bacteria can get under the dead shell.
Then i would get some iodine and but that on.

I have many tortoises here with some shell rot and thats how i treat it.

Also when in the bath get a bush and gently scrub the shell to remove loose peices

This tortoise is probably happy to be being looked after by you now. I don't think any of us would have turned away, even the ones of us who are less experienced at keeping tortoises.

One thing though, I definately would report the person you got it from to the RSPCA armed with the photos you put on here. What must all his other animals be going through?

Very well done in saving this tortoise. I wish i could do what you do, well done.
He`s got old shell rot, its quite old and isn`t infected and looks healed and probably is flaking off now so just leave it as it is, but he was obviously at one point kept in a moist/humid environment.
As you mention, the owners just didn`t know. This little guy is so lucky that you found him. He`s a nice tort.

Hi,
I'm glad you've got him now.

His shell has had some shellrot in the past. All the white bits are dead bone. Once the shell underneath has healed the bone will loosen and come off. Unless you smell anything that smells rotten on his shell, the shellrot isn't still going on. The nails look like they were worn down and should grow back with the right substrate.
If you want to cover the tank so he can't see out, I'd put something on the outside of the tank and not the inside. That way he can't take it down.

I wonder if your local paper would be interested in this story,maybe they would help financially for vets bills especially with a new baby on the way

I`ve been around the usa forums and got my tortoise care guides from there so i do think ur doing such a good job over this neck of the woods in helping all us uk tort owners.
