this is absolutely disgusting.

I work in shipping and I have always stated to everyone that I will not be involved in the shipping of live animals at all. If anyone came to me and said they had a shipmet of tortoises I would report them to any and every agency I could find.

This is absolutely atrocious and is very upsetting but people do need to know.

Very sad, I had always wanted a torti my whole life, and at the age of 45 after reading books, researching etc I bought a captive bred one, everyone I speak to says "I thought it was banned in this country", then I need to explain, yes, buying imported torts is banned, now i totally understand why, that of course and the danger of mites etc, so hopefully your photos have opened a few eyes!

Oh my Gosh!!!! These picture can not be comprehended - how can anyone do that to an animal. There should be some law, or at least a campaign to stop pet shops and rogue traders to be allowed to import these beautiful creatures, and to make the public aware of the hidden atrocities of not buying from a reputable breeder. I have today had to let go of my two beautiful horsefield tortoises, due to severe illness, and am blessed to have found a wonderful home for them, and I know how important it was for me to find a 'special home', because tortoises interact so well with humans, and have such characters, and it grieves me to think of the poor unfortunate tortoises who never got a chance at life, and the physical pain they must of gone through. And for those that have survived, it is horrific to see the physical and mental torture they must endured before finally making it to 'hopefully the perfect home'. If they do not find the perfect home, then again they are mistreated, either through ignorance, or lack of love. Maybe there should be some sort of licence, that you can only keep tortoises if you have taken a basic recognised course in how to look after them and treat them - then maybe the number of people keeping them would go down, and not as many would be imported. Obviously there will always be a black market, but hopefully the legal number would fall drastically.

Do a little research... you'll find this rarely happens today. Even then it was a rarity. (check the date)
