Default Settling in

Lily has been very quiet today but I assume it will take her a while to settle in to her new surroundings

I have made her a pen indoors to start off with before I put her out into greenhouse. I have ordered some extra bits ie thermometer and don't want her outside until I can monitor temps properly first.

I have offered her food and water but no signs of interest yet. she had quite a lot of grass, fruit and veg with previous owner but all I have offered her is weeds, grass and timothy hay.

I am keeping a very close eye on her at the moment. I can't wait until the quarantine is over and she can go and meet Honey

Nearly forgot the nails on Lily's back legs are very long and could do with cutting. never had to cut tortoises nails before only ever filed a beak or two. any advice would be welcome.

PS Lily has just moved she has only turned around but at least she has moved

Hello and welcome to your new home lilly.

How long are her nails?

I would try and file them bit by bit using a sheet of sand paper stuck down in her enclosure.

hi lisa

also i was thinking what about those feet files that you buy for us humans

my daughter has difficulty cutting her toe nails because of her sight

she was advised by a chiropodist to file them rather than cut them

this works well even the big toes

scholl do a very good one for about £2.50

i read somewhere that the nail clippers used for cats and dogs are the incorrect shape for torts and can apparently cause the nails to split

Lisa, sticking some 120grit aluminium oxide paper to a small sheet of plywood would be no hasstle for a tradesman like Tom, think of it as an oversised emmery board.

Linda, healthy tortoises dont drag their plastron along the floor, they walk on their legs and hence file the nails.

The sand paper will file quicker than just rough terrain.

Possibly Linda, but I doubt it would cause any more than a rough piece of slate etc. I don't use sand paper in my tables. I prefer slate and other more natural materials for this purpose.
