Are UV bulbs really necessary?

I've decided to get some UV lighting for the greenhouse for the winter anyway, just in case some of my torts don't hibernate. And if they do all hibernate I may put the uv lighting to some other use and get a comfy bed in there and some sunbed goggles too - so that the pale beige colour I usually go in the winter may get some kind of bronze tinge too it. You are now going to tell me that it's a different uv bulb for sunbeds, but please don't - as I am expecting that the placebo effect may bronze me anyway.

Heeee heee and if that fails I can get you a spray on UV effect you, will have to apply it from more than 12 inches though!
