Default Mmmm ... what do you think?

I wonder if this article will see a rise in tortoise thefts and more people wanting tortoises ... thinking they are worth £6000

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...with-CCTV.html

I get nervous when articles like this appear as it makes some people see a tortoise with a financial value and potentially worth stealing.

After what happened to me this week ( my garden was broken into and the police think that they where after the tortoises) i am paranoid about tortoise theft. I was thinking of getting a couple more for my birthday, but i am now seriously reconsidering this as i would be heartbroken if anything happened to them.

I won't even leave my torts out overnight, for fear someone would take them. The kids round here are kinda rough, and I imagine they'd take pets for fun just to play football with them...And they are only out when I'm home

There are loads of weeds around the house, and the man who lives next door but one asked what they were for when I was picking them...

They're kinda rough and really did not want to say for the tortoises, so I said for my guinea pigs.

I think it's bad when you have to lie about why you're picking weeds, just in case they think there's value in the torts and steal them...

Here we go … two separate thefts within a five mile radius from back gardens in the last 3 days Actually had people come up and say they thought tortoises were just a tortoise and didnt realise they were worth thousands and commented on the article in the paper

Our next tortoise meeting on June 20th is on security (indoor and outdoor) with our police wildlife crime officer .... all welcome

It scares me to death.
It was like a living hell having my 3 chihuahuas stolen from my home.
This is why i dont have anyone at my home when picking up baby tortoises.
Also when weed picking if anyone asks me if i have a rabbit i just say yes, it also stops the long stories of 'oh i had a tortoise many years back we fed it jam sandwiches'
