Emergency hospital visit.
On Wednesday afternoon my husband suddenly noticed something wrong with the vision in his left eye. He had strings of black floaters across it and later, when it was dark and he went outside the eye had flashes of light inside it. We rang the medical centre next morning and managed to get an appointment for 5pm. As soon as the Dr. heard about the flashes he gave us a note to go straight to A and E at the brand new hospital in Cartagena. We didn´t have to wait long before we saw a DR. who said there were no eye specialists there at the moment but he was going to make a phone call to see if Robin could be seen on Saturday as today is the Spanish Christmas so a holiday. When he phoned he discovered that there was an eye specialist still at his clinic in the hospital so sent us off to see him. We saw him at 7pm and after examining the eye told us that Robin had a hole at the back of his eye and the retina was about to become detached if he didn´t have immediate laser surgery to mend the hole. Sooooo at 7.30 poor old Robin had some anaesthetic drops put in his eye and was lasered for a few minutes. Not a very pleasant procedure but it did the trick so hopefully saved his sight in that eye. That Dr. usually goes home at 3pm but not that day----thank goodness. He has to return to the hospital on Saturday and then again several times during the coming week as more holes could open up so he´s not out of the woods yet. So now you know----if you get a lot of floaters AND light flashes in your eyes, have it seen to at once. Also Robin´s National Spanish Health card was a month out of date we discovered when we went to A and E but he was still treated, for free. Nothing but good to say of the Spanish health service.

Thats brilliant that he got quick attention which helped save his eye sight. Hopefully he'll be fine now x
Now he has had the laser will he have really good vision and won't need glasses?

Hi Lynn, thanks for your reply. No, what the laser surgery did this time was to repair the break and so prevent the retina from detaching. I think corrective vision treatment is a different thing altogether.

I know someone who suffered this and a detached retina is painful as well as dangerous for the sight, so you both must have gone through hell.
Glad that it was caught in time and I hope Robin makes a full recovery. x

Thank goodness for the quick treatment he received !
I am an insulin dependant diabetic and I get checked regularly for diabetic retinopathy, the procedure is not nice at all, you have to have drops administered to the eye in order to dilate the pupil fully, it feels like acid being put in your eye at the time ! I can relate to the unpleasant procedure fully. Best of luck to your husband. |
