Please help with confirmations
I have my shiny new weed book - which is really good. I think I have had a successful afternoon foraging trip - but I could do with some confirmation from some experts before I go ahead and feed things to my tots.
1 - I thought this might be doves foot Cranesbill (never found any before) Right shape and has pink flowers and leaves are furry and split Also the stems have a red tinge. 2 - Looks like some kind of vetch and seems to match the pictures I've seen - no flowers showing on the plants I found today though. 3 - I was impressed with this when I found it and was sure I had seen the leaves before - the ends of the leaves look like sorrel - not entirely sure this is a big sorrel plant though? 4 - Thought this might be herb Robert but on closer inspection I don't think the leaves are right. Red stalks. 5 - Last and least - this stuff looks like parsley but doesn't smell of parsley? I looked up parsley - it didnt help As always a big thank you to all that can help

The first one is Cranesbill, or Storksbill.
The second could be a Vetch. I would stear clear of vetches, there are so many, if you don't know what you are feeding, you could do more harm than good. The third looks like one of the Mustards, ok in moderation as most are high in Oxylates. The fourth looks like Salad Burnet but I wouldn't feed it unless you were absolutely sure. The fifth one is Cow Parsley, loved by rabbits but not guinea pigs or tortoises! |

No 1 is one of many cultivated geranium type plants. I believe these all to be safe but my tortoises refuse to eat most of them.
No 2 I suspect not to be a vetch. Those always have tendrils for climbing and this plant looks quite big as well as not having them. No 3 I agree with SL this looks like a mustard and safe. No 4 is not herb robert but I don;t know what it is. No 5 is an umbellifer and they all look the same to me; they are not thought of as food plants for tortoises.

Thanks for all the input guys.
On closer inspections and with another look at my book I think you could be right about no. 2 being sanfoin Alan. - I need to wait a bit and go back to see if it has flowers at some point to confirm. Now you have suggested it I am pretty sure No. 4 is Salad Burnet. It smells of Cucumber when crushed and has some tiny red flowers (the buds hadn't quite opened though) again I will double check when I go and visit the plant again. No. 3 fits the description of Hedge Mustard - It has the clusters of flowers and the right type of leaves - I thought I had looked at similar pictures before but couldn't remember it last night Fools Parsley sounds about right - I am a fool and I thought it looked like parsley You were right Alan - this Collins guide is a really good book, Once I get better at finding the right family's I will be almost independent (one day)
