My tortoise has diarrhoea
Hello
My tortoise has diarrhoea about once a week. She was checked by a tortoise specialist last year for worms and has none. She is housed alone and doesn't go in the garden. She is a star tortoise. I feed her weeds, florette crispy, Timothy hay dried weed/flowers mix and calcium from shelled warrior shop. Any ideas. I think sometimes she does it when roaming in the kitchen or in the bath outside her cage. Like she's getting rid of it while she's out Is this normal? She's 6. Jade |

Jade, didn't I just read a post saying your little one eats her poops ! may be the answer there.....I think she was an Indian Star wasn't she. Someone with knowledge will probably post to advise. I would say my lot sometimes do then don't so varies I think with diet temps, etc and eating poop wont help of course ! CB

I know certain plants can have a laxative effect such as sedum or cacti/succulents. Could it be after you have fed her something like that? Or does she have one in her enclosure that she is snacking on? Also if you let her free roam in the house, could she be finding and eating things she shouldn't?

No she is supervised in the kitchen and doesn't consume any thing.
No she has diarrhoea when she hasn't had cactus sometimes and its not a pattern or anything. Thanks though it could have been☺ |

Too much salad food without the fibre needed, does and will cause runny poos.

what you don't seem to get is I feed her timothy hay with the lettuce which is extremely high in fibre. tortoise trust recommends that and feeds that to their own. I'm afraid they are much more qualified to predict and assure people of you feed it with hay lettuce is fine. also I have been conversing with tortoise table uk and explained her diet to them and they say it's great and timothy hay that I'm feeding with the lettuce is great for star tortoises. so yes I trust their judgement over yours. |

I agree with Sandy , easy to listen and not hear sometimes. Sandy is v v experienced keeper and if what you've read and are doing still shows signs of diarrhoea it's time to take another look at advice. Personally even supervised stomps round the kitchen isn't good idea with a tortoise with diarrhoea, s/he has obviously picked up something and that could be a pathogen, bacteria, fungus which we don't and can't see with the naked eye. If it continues I would seek a vets advice as its not good if s/he still has it after this time.
