thanks everyone, i am quite surprised they are in such good condition, like i said in an earlier post they werent kept very well.
no matter what i feed them they are always hungry, sprinkled on about 30 turtle pellets last night, they ate them all, then i gave them some king prawns, they ate about 4 of them each, then a little bit meat, they are always hungry!!!
im using a fluval 3+ filter, but its not doing its job as well as i hoped, need to either put 2 filters in beside them or get an external pond filter for them, as im sure you all know big turtles like this can and do make a fair bit of mess.

King Prawns? That's a bit posh, mine don't get anything as fancy as that!

Although having said that I picked up a load of Trout for them in Sainsbury's last week, marked down to just 10p each!

i havent tried king prawns on any my other turtles, but i just thought seeing as they were huge i would get them some, the ones i got still had eyes and the shell round them too, and i have read that prawn shells are a good source of calcium for turtles, so i fed them the whole thing, and they munched them down as if they hadnt eaten before.

whats everyones thought on feeding turtles pinkies?? are these suitable??

do you give the trout as it is?? or cook it or do anything with it first??

Never tried pinkies but they should be OK, I just cut strips of flesh off the trout, I don't give them the whole thing but I suppose there's no reason why not to, except that they're small turtles and wouldn't eat the whole thing.

Darren,
Why dont you get an external cannister fiter. This will do the job amazingly well on your tank, also providing the RES's with an excercise machine. They enjoy swimming against the current.
This is a fluval 204 that i use, when they are indoors.

Most decent garden centres that do fish (tropical), they cost from £39, ecco do a similar one also. External cannister filter is the way to go.
You have an inlet hose and an outlet pipe, the filter sits outside or below the tank, you just need to prime them. Excellent mecanical filtration sytsem, allows you to use an array of filter media.

Fluval 205 isn't really big enough for a 4.5' tank though unless you only have very small terrapins, most people go for the 405, or even the new FX5. Whatever capacity they recommend for fish you need to go 2-3 x that for terrapins. The Rena Filstar XP3 is another good one at a budget price.
