Mecca7 Basically the idea of a coldframe it not to house a tortoise in on a perminant basis, they usually act as part of an outdoor enclosure, they are usually raised off the ground on bricks. this enables the tortoises to walk freely in and out of the coldframe. other people may add a 'door' and board up the sides so that the torts do not get stressed by the glass. they are in no way like a viv.

Hi

My 2 have been outside and have tested thier coldframe which I bought from Ebay a few weeks ago ( exactly the as the one for sale next week in Lidl`s) Only one decided to go in it and dug him self in the top soil and bark that I put in there.
The other one went for an adventure and loved it, they had a bath and generally loved it, because they are only 9 months old they are back inside now as the temp is dropping its been in the 80`s in the back garden this afternoon.
The coldfrane is a way for them to seek shelter if they want but I stress it is not designed for them to be in 24/7 they have a way in and out as it is on bricks so the choice is theirs at all times, their enclosure is large so its the next best thing to actually being in their own environment in the wild.
Vivariums are glass and stress the torts out and are not good for them, if they were we would all be using them instead of buying or making our tortoise tables.
Have you had a look at the new torotise tables that Dazza stocks they are fab, if I get any more tortoises Im getting one of the tables.

Hi Sam,

We had a thread on this a long time ago, and maybe Egyptian Dan will come in with the answer, but my recollection is that nothing lets UVB through except acryllic, and it is very expensive.
