Hole in seal for fridge or not?

Hi folks

Got my girl in her husky fridge, day two and i keep opening door for air and I'm really unsure about making a hole in the seal or not. Again seems to be contradictory info out there. Help please!

hi there
it would be best to cut a small piece out of the seal at top of fridge just to allow air in.that way you dont lose all your cold air every time you open the fridge door.

just a thought
if its a brand new fridge and it fails under guarantee you will have a job exchanging it if you cut it up a bit.

I know that if you have a hole in the seal the fridge becomes useless, at least that's been the case all my life but maybe they are different these days.

BTW, torts only breathe about once a minute when in there so there is plenty air to last ages

last year I had no hole and maintained topshelf temp of 5.7c ...this year cut a small hole and pushed a tube in with an aquarium pump running full time and have a very steady topshelf temp of 6.2c no real difference at all really......just giving feedback...

This feedback is really useful thank you everyone. I think I will stay with opening the door a few times a day. the temp seems to stay relatively stable when I do this.

you should only need to open the door once a day however it does no harm to check on your tort a couple of times, keep it quick though certainly for the first few days after putting your tort in. You'll ruin the fridge if you break the seal and as you should be at home for the duration of the hibernation ( not going away) then there shouldn't be a problem with a morning and evening check. Torts can breath under several inches/feet of soil so the air in a fridge is plenty. Don't open it several times though twice a day should be enough, its not just the temp that is affected the light may disturb the torts.

I didn't realise it was one of those mini fridges, that might make a difference to how often you should open it
