in my box i built a little stand thing to attach the trex i have, and when i used a strip light i just put a narrrow plank of wood over
i reccomend a trex, they cost 50 but last two years, the strips cost about 18 and last 9 months so price is about equal but the trex bulbs a much better for uv output.
you will need sme nutrobal, available quite cheap.

and would this kind of lamp over flashes pad facing down be better than what he has now

is it just a standard 40w bulb used as the spotlight (is that the correct term) and indeed is it to be left on for 12 hrs a day ?

so i take it i give him as much sun as poss till i can get a T rex

but then what of the spotlight

im sorry for ranting like an idiot

but have no where else to turn folks

Andy he will get sick really quick if you feed him those pellets you mentioned above, they are a definate NO NO, they are very high in protein, they will make his shell go all lumpy (pyramid shaped) and make him grow far too fast, your horsfield needs a mixture of weeds sprinkled with a mix of neutrobal/limestone flour (calcium) 2/3 days a week the other days just limestone. There is a weed section on this site for examples of weeds and garden plants.

And yes you will probably need a spot bulb with the Trex, only use the spot bulb in the winter to boost the heat up, the trex on its own has been fine for the spring/summer months.

Who was the seller?

All the best Vivienne

that lamp is great over the enclosure, and 12 to 14 hours a day is good and yes plenty of sunlight whenever u can, u may need to change to a higher wattage bulb or just bend the neck to get a basking spot of 35 ish

Where in the north east are you, im in boro.

jarrow area

bought him form a paper / a breeder

so the t rex pellets a are no good ???

T-REX TORTOISE PELLETS are probably the most popular dry Tortoise food available.

It is suitable for most types of land tortoises including Hermanns, Spur Thighed. Horsfelds, Deserts, Leopards, Stars, Red Foots and Burmese Mountain.

I have successfully fed this food to all sizes of tortoises including hatchlings.

The way to feed this is to soak for around 4/5 minutes and serve with their favourite weeds and veg. The pellets are nutritionally fortified but I add grated cuttlefish for additional calcium 2/3 times a week.

ANALYSIS

PROTEIN 13%

FAT 3%

FIBRE 10%

ASH 12.5%

An average daily feed of T REX is between 5g - 15g depending upon size.

I am selling this in various sizes as follows

400g £4.99 + £2.20

thats what the add said ? ? ?

how is that bad for him guys

Hi Andy,

The first item in the list says it all: Protein 13%
Med torts (and horsfields count as med torts) need a very low protein, very high fibre diet. I also was sold the TRex pellets when I got my horsfield, but I heard they were bad for them before I ever got a chance to feed them. I held on to them for ages, thinking I could find some use for them and eventually threw them out and used the plastic container to keep my limestone flour in. And no fruit for torts (the sugar content in it can cause a parasitic bloom in their guts). I know it sounds boring to us, but weeds, weeds, weeds (and flowers) are a nutritious feast for them.

You'll love having a horsfield -- they've got great personalities. Have you looked on these sites yet?

Cat litter contains chemicals which tortoises can ingest.
Straw has pointy bits which can poke a tortoise eye, also can get damp and cause mould spores
which can kill your tortoise.
If hay is not kept in a dry place can also produce mould spores if it gets damp.
Tortoise pellets contain high proteins which will make your tortoise grow to fast
and get lumpy, which in turn can kill your tortoise. The only reason they are produced
is for profit profit profit. Also for keepers who dont/wont grow or go out and pick the
weeds tortosies need for a healthy diet.
Sorry to be so strong, but i have seen the results of tortoises fed on pellets, and its
pitiful, most have since died.
