Default broken egg during birth

Hello,

I have a star tortoise which lay several eggs this year. Last month, I was watching her laying an egg and the egg bursted during laying by her "anus". And the same thing happened one week later under my witness. Any idea what this happened ? As my tortoise lay egg one by one with about one month period in between, is it possible to be the same clauch but not able to lay so that the egg stay too long inside the body ?

Thx,
Ben

I don't know anything about stars but I wonder if your tort is lacking in calcium causing the shells to be to weak, I'm sure though that someone with more knowledge will answer.

It does sound like your female isn't getting enough calcium to shell the eggs properly.

I am definitely not an expert, but could it be that something has disrupted her and she squeezed her muscles instead of pushed? (if there are any muscles at all around her cloaca...).

There are but if an egg is shelled properly it doesn't matter how hard a female pushes or how big the egg is.

I agree with Dan, certain to be lack of calcium, females always need a lot more to build up reserves for egg laying, and for their muscles too:0)

my females will often sit and eat a whole cuttle fish over 2 days a few weeks before laying to build up their reserves
