Default Another first for us!!

We acquired a pair of LTC G. spengleri last fall. They had lived with the same guy for over 4 years. He had kept them together and never had any luck getting them to breed. In over 4 years he never had a single egg. They have been living apart since we got them with a few conjugal visits in March and April. Well this is what I found today. A HUGE egg. I say huge because in relationship to the size of the little turtle, the egg is enormous!! Hopefully I can get the incubation right and that it is fertile.

This.....

Plus this......

Equals this.......

Sorry, I know nothing about turtles. What size are these turtles? and how heavy is the egg?

The adults are around 4 inches SCL and weigh around 140 grams. I did not weigh the egg, but it is nearly as big as a small Pancake tortoise egg!

In that pic, the male is eyeing down his girl. They have the most interesting mating ritual where they will both stick their necks way out and move their head side to side very slowly. Then something occurs and the female takes off and the male is in pursuit. He can't be kept with her for very long, just too stressful for her.

Such sweet little faces. In the second picture is the male on the left of the screen as we look at it?
