I hated getting rid of the red one and it was nice seeing the yellow one go on its merry way.
The photos actually do not do the animals justice.

Turtle With Boy’s Initials Turns Up Alive 47 Years*Later
May 4, 2012 12:00 AM Share this View Comments (Credit: KDKA) Reporting David*Highfield Filed Under Local, News, Syndicated Local Related Tags David Highfield, Holland Cokeley, Jeff Cokeley, South Strabane, Turtle, Washington County SOUTH STRABANE (KDKA) — It was 1965 when a boy in Washington County carved his initials in a turtle’s shell and then let it go. Now, 47 years later, the turtle is still alive and has been found by the boy’s dad. Holland Cokeley, 85, of South Strabane, Washington County, was walking in the woods of his backyard with his neighbor’s dog, Zack. Zack began poking around at something and Cokeley realized it was a turtle. He didn’t think much of it, until he gave it a closer look. “I picked it up, and I thought ‘Oh geez, this is Jeff’s turtle!’” said Cokeley. “It’s been here for 47 years, and it still has the same the same markings on it!” Jeff was 13-years old in 1965 when he carved “JC” and “1965″ on the turtle’s bottom shell and then released it back into the wild. Jeff Cokeley now lives in New York State, but began laughing when his dad sent him pictures of the turtle. Experts say under the right conditions in the wild, eastern box turtles can live up to a hundred years. Holland Cokeley kept it for a couple days and then released it, so it can wander for perhaps many more years. As far as the why to it,sure it was unnecessary, and its something no one needs to do,but you forget it was done by a 13 year old boy in 1965.You couldnt justify a kid doing it nowadays, and you couldnt justify an adult doing it,but it makes sense why a kid would do that, and especially back then when they did different things for fun.You still have to hold the turtle down long enough and hope it doesnt bite you. Im sure the turtles of the world are able to hold their own. reply JST_KIDDING 4 hours ago It's just a turtle tattoo!!! reply Tv 16 hours ago I'm really sorry, but I wish they hadn't published this article. I hope that no one else decides to copy this insensitive child's actions and carve his/her initials in a turtle. hide 1 reply reply Cadence22510 7 hours ago well it sounds like the turtle is gonna make it.... reply Phil Booth 19 hours ago The hare is expected to arrive sometime next August. hide 1 reply reply Asfd 1 hour ago The Hare died 56 years ago, his great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great,...........great,great,great,great, grandson is filling in as a proxy runner. reply JANICE4239 1 day ago What a teriffic story. And I just knew some Ignoramus was going to make a stupid comment about torturing an animal. 1965 people. Way different time and attitudes back then. And what more proof do you need that this turtle wasn't harmed if it's still alive and thriving 47 years later? hide 1 reply reply Emily 17 hours ago how you would like to have your skin carved into? Yes you will still live for many many years, but the action would not hurt nonetheless or leave less of a scar reply 91rete8 1 day ago Mike in Orlando - Get a life reply Aksj 1 day ago I like Tuhtles. reply Mikerolando 1 day ago How disturbed was this kid? Torturing animals and his father and he think its funny? I doubt he would like it if someone carved their initials into his back. sheesh hide 1 reply reply Jbellis 16 hours ago You are a Moron!! reply Lisa 1 day ago ah, a lovely heartwarming story about disfiguring a living animal. Woulda been a cool story, except for that part.... needless to say (I hope!), please don't carve, paint, or put fingernail polish on live turtle shells, it's very damaging. While this female eastern box turtle was not apparently permanently harmed by the procedure, underneath the horn covered outer shell is bone, which can suffer from infections if exposed. It's also worth noting that eastern box turtles are now protected in PA, and can't be kept as pets - the PA Fish and Boat Commission has set a zero possession limit on them. hide 2 replies reply Bob 1 day ago They are protected in PA? I didn't know that. I still plan on keeping the 14 I have. I did carve my initials and the year into the shell of four of them. I'm going to let them go and see if we find them again 30 years from now. That would be cool. reply Emily 1 day ago You are right Lis, turtle shells are very sensitive. Poor turtle, having initials carved into him must have really hurt reply Lboswell28 1 day ago Is Jeff still alive ? If so, what did he think of the find ... inquiring minds want to know these facts folks !! hide 1 reply reply JC 1 day ago Read it fully..
