Chickens and fireworks
As the fireworks start getting bad would anybody advise bringing my chickens in for a few hours every evening instead of leaving them just in their coop? I was going to put them in a box filled with straw in the dark but did not know whether this would stress them more than just leaving them out? Any advise? Also for the past few weeks my girls have been laying just a couple of eggs per week, I suppose this is perfectly normal given the drop in temperature recently and also they seem to be going through their first moult - I suppose I just want reassurance that this is normal?

it maybe a good idea to do this as it will stop them hearign the lound bangs but then u have to think about bring them in and out each night is going to have effects on the constant drop and increase in there body tempertures, as u mentioned it's getting colder at night so bring them in a warm house and then bak intot he cold is bad for there bodies unless u are grantuly doing this. as fireworks start about now and carry on until like years eve lol.
i wud try insulating there coop abit more if they are getting scared......do u actually know it is scaring them as i know by nieobour across the raod keeps barn owls and his don't have a problem with the lound noises. there are much more experinced bird keepers on here that can help, try asking darren (piglet) as he is a wizkid on birds. |

Yeah, mine stay out. But with 60 it would be hard to bring them in lol. So yeah, as long as they feel safe, they will be fine.

Ours stay out and we've had no problems over the years. Do you belong to any of the poultry forums? Some good ones are:
www.practicalpoultry.co.uk www.pekinbantams.com www.thepoultrygarden.co.uk www.thepoultrykeeper.co.uk Most breeds of chickens do lay irregularly or stop laying during moult and over the winter, unless they are hybrids. What breeds do you keep? Carrie |
