dear all

its been sometime since I have posted ( for which I am sorry) life takes over

currently in the middle of a divorce ... my ex has valued my THB at £2000 as part of the settlement

my female THB is approx. 50 years old in very good health microchipped and produces regular summertime eggs but she has not had any friendly contact ..

I am NOT looking to sell her or to receive offers to taker her off my hands but I am looking for some feedback which will give some idea of current market value to ensure I get my tortoise into my care and I do not get ripped off by my ex and her solicitor.

please answer sensitively during this difficult family time .

I'm really sorry to hear about your circumstances. It must be incredibly stressful.
Having an adult female does add price on to a tortoise, but if she's not proven to lay fertile eggs I would think that would affect the price (possibly).
I'm really going out on a limb but I would say that £2000 is very over-priced. I would have thought you could easily quarter that and maybe still be over-priced.
I'm sure someone with a bit more idea of what an adult female THB is worth will be along to offer better advice, but I think £2000 is incredibly over-valued.

As much as we think our tortoises are priceless there are hundred upon hundreds of Tortoises on rehoming sites free. Single, pairs and groups, open to members non members who can show due regard to their care and good homes. If it went to family court then I would suggest it would equate to the long term care costs rather than value of the actual tortoise but will be led by the greater and more experienced.

Sorry to hear you are splitting up if you take a zero off that silly price you won't be far away I have paid £500 for a trio hope this helps.

There are far too many older tortoises come up for rehoming to make any med tortoise to be anything near that sort of price.
A couple of hundred more like it.

I would rehome and not put any price on her. I'm sorry about your situation I really am but I do think rehoming to an experienced and careful sensitive owner would be best. After all, in this particular issue - is it really about the money or the welfare and concern for your tortoise. I'm sorry if that sounds a wee bit blunt. I truly wish you luck with all situations. xx

Steve really sorry about your situation. I agree with the others, that sounds very over priced, although I wouldn't know an actual value, it would definitely only have 3 digits. Good luck.

£200 sounds like a good price to me though as others have said you really can't put a price on a tort. It seems like your ex Steve is starting at the price for a hatchling (120£) and increasing the cost by years. We all know it doesn't work like that, particularly when you see what people want for the older torts on rehoming sites.

I got £500 for my pair of breeding Ibera a couple of years back and most of that was for the female who laid an average of 20 eggs per year and was in her 40's with the male in his late teens.

£250-300 it depends if she has paperwork, as without it she could only be given away. No monetry value
