After some help and advice on a horsfield set up
Hi
Im getting a horsfield tortoise soon and im looking to his/her set up. What lamp do i need? There are 100s for sale at different watts etc and im so confused by it all. (any links to suitable ones on ebay or somewhere would be great). Is just normal top soil for the bedding? Do baby torts have these calcium blocks? Anything else i need as a essential? Thanks |

Topsoil is the best substrate or you could use the coco coir blocks from pets at home or ikea it pretty similar to soil, you just soak the block in water o it expands.
As for lighting it depends on whether you want to use a combi bulb, or 2 separate bulbs for heating and uv. I use a zoomed heat bulb and an arcadia 12% bulb for the uv. Baby torts can have a calcium block, you can also give them a piece of cuttle fish that you normally give birds, this give some calcium and also keeps their beak trim. You can get some nutrobal powder and limestone flour (calcium powder), both are available from the sw shop. I sprinkle nutrobal on their food one day and calcium powder the next.
