Unhappy Dog tragedy.

My daughter in the UK has just told me about something that happened to a friends' dog this week. The friend has two dogs, a yorkie type bitch and a neutered jack russel type terrier. The bitch was in season. The two dogs had been allowed to mate. Friday morning, when the owner came into the kitchen first thing, she found blood, vomit and faeces all over the floor. As she was mopping up, she found a small bone amongst the mess. A little later she noticed the male dog wasn't behaving normally so took him to the vet where he was anaesthetised so that he could be examined painlessly. The bone was,of course, the dog's penis bone and the vet recommended euthanasia as nothing could be done and the dog would have constant infections and a miserable life so he was put to sleep there and then.

The vet said that while tied with the bitch she probably tried to free herself and twisted and turned while the poor male was "attached" and thus she did the damage.

Well I must say how irresponsible of both owners to allow an in season bitch to be with this dog. As a dog breeder myself, I would say these people should not be keeping dogs at all. Although what happened is a most unusual case because most neutered dogs would be unable to get a tie, the poor dogs must have had a dreadful time. The behaviour of the owners leaves a lot to be desired. I hope the bitch has now been booked in for spaying.
