I put a rock in the corner where she likes to sleep...
basically tricks can consist of mean things that cause no pain or are overly traumatic...

Why would you want to do that? I think that's more spiteful then "playing tricks" How would you like it if you went up to bed to find your door nailed shut?

to see what she will do... she doesn't know its there yet... also to see if she will dig it up, or just sleep somewhere else (like her hide like a normal tortoise!)

I don't play with mine at all, in fact I only ever pick him up when needed for bathing, weighing etc.

I mostly just pick up for bathing and measuring, I just like to mess with the pets... devil makes work for idle hands and all that (mostly I mess with the dog, its just too easy!)

I don't think it's nice or clever to treat animals who have no voice in that way. How can an animal trust you or feel safe if they don't know what will happen next.

yes you see that is the point!

I think I am not too mean, and my dog does very much trust me (but she has very poor short term memory after an accident so I don't think she remembers what I do half the time! I used to be able to spend 5 minutes offering her the same pebble, which she would take, realise it was a pebble and spit it out over and over again because she couldn't remember).

I have never done anything mean to the tortoise previous to this (also she seems to have picked a different place to sleep without even knowing the stone is there...)
