Hi There I'm very interested to give my tortoise a friend so wondered if you could tell me What the cost is approximately

I do believe my tort is a herman' he has a nail like toe at the end of his tail which i think says hes a male.
We was given the tort by friends because they couldn't be bothered with him'which is a crying shame as he so cute and still vary small at about 6 or 7 inches from nose to tail.
Hes currently in a vivarium like enclosure which I'm not a fan of to be honest'But as soon as the temp get warmer i want to make him an outside enclosure so he can Rome around but with boundaries and roof to keep him safe.
I'm learning as i go but get confused with all the heaters and so on' Is it a good idea to turn the heat off now to acclimatise him ready for the outside world ? hes in the bedroom which gets very warm as does the rest of the house

Thanks in advance guys really looking forward to some assistance here

When you have done 5 posts you can then post a picture of your tort, which would be a good idea then someone can identify him for you. If he is a male of any species, he is best on his own, two males usually fight and one male and one female isn't good either, because the male will constantly pester the female, some species can be very aggressive, with biting, bashing and obviously lots of mating. The female will become very stressed, so it's not a good idea. Usually if you are keeping a male with any female , you need about 3or4 females to keep him happy. So you see, he really doesn't need a friend.

Both male and female hermans have the spur on the tip of the tail.

Start a new thread about your tortoise under identification , only three more posts and you can post a pic.

When you measure him, you have to do the straight carapace length. Put piece of paper on the floor , up to the skirting, put tort on paper and push him gently upto the skirting , head first. Then mark the paper at the tail end, where his shell ends, then take him off and draw a line from the edge of the paper( that was against the skirting) to the mark on the paper, measure this line. I hope this isn't too complicated. This will give you the straight carapace length.
