You can use it in a supplimental way whenever you like. It'll add fibre to the diet which even if its solely weed based can sometimes be lacking if you are constantly feeding fresh, young leaves. Its not entirely deficient of nutritional value. It carries a dry protein content of around 9%

I'm wondering if I mixed it up with weeds and nutrobal, then I might not need Komodo!

Yes. Fibre is important. Fruit and veg contain mainly soluable fibre. Grains, grasses, plant stems and the like contain non soluable fibres like cellulose. Cellulose is also what is known as a detergent fibre. An animals digestive enzymes cannot break it down so the animal depends on bacteria in the gut to undertake the breaking down of the cellulose and a portoin of the nutrition is passed to the animal. Feeding cellulose based fibre is a way of reeling in the nutritional value of the food offered to the tortoise. It really depends whether you feel a close replication of a natural feeding regime is the route you want to go down. This product is pretty much the antithesis of complete diets like Komodo.

Is it a fairly new product then as not many seem to have tried it?

I can't comment on combining it with komodo,I haven't tried it. You'd add fibre to the diet but the complete diet may negate the aspects I mentioned above.

It's been manufactured and used on the continent for a decade. Its name checked in Holger Vetters 2005 book on Hermanns. Its only since Andy Highfield recommended it last year that it has really come to prominence in the UK. (I was using it before that ).
