Default Winter veg

Opinion needed on:-. Some use Butternut Squash as a fill in winter food, this is acceptable but is slightly high in Protein, the calcium to phosphorus ratio is ok 1:0.5 , looking at some veg table statistics two more come out better if calcium is added, like limestone flour they are.
Alfalfa Sprouting lower in, Protein, Potassium, phosphorus, magnessium, sodium and calcium, which can be altered.
Egg Plant Aubergine flesh, also lower in everything as above compared to Butternut Squash.
Anyone with past info on these two veg. Alfalfa Sprouting i don't think iv'e seen in supermarkets, Aubergine is more common, a big bulging purple thing.

Yeah, wondering why the two veg that come out better for them is not included, or maybe they are.

For winter, probably still can get dandilion, dead nettle, (possibly) some jack by the hedge, winter pansies or other winter flowers, add some dried grass or something, a bit of rommaine, pak choi and a bit of BN Squash ??
That might be ok for a bit?? Maybe?? xxx

Hi Paul Interesting. I think I have seen the Alfafa stuff in holland & barret, fresh in the fridge at the back. I tried mine with some aubergine last year, most of them loved it & they all love butternut squash.

I too have been thinking about winter, hoping to hibernate most but I have 1definate that cant & possibly a second, that I wouldnt risk.

I have been stocking up & re-rooting Opuntia & also is it Kalanche?(houseplant, has little flowers) They have this - calling it "flaming Katie" in Wilkinson at the moment for £1.78 per plant which is a good price. ( that came in handy last year. I remember the snow litterally drowning all my seed trays last year!

You can sprout your own Alfalfa, buy seeds on ebay and either sprout them in a flat tray on wet kitchen roll or buy a sprouter like I have.

As for the question you really want the answer to, I know that Aubergine is toxic to parrots so presumably the same goes for torts?

Alfalfa is high in protein so maybe not suitable to torts. Butternut squash, I have noticed, is usually suggested as just grating the skin so maybe it doesn't have as much protein as the flesh. Just a guess though.

Dont forget shelled warriors now have a large range of dried weeds/flowers. Aimed to use as part of a mixed weed diet and not be used on their own.

The Aubergine i don't know, toxic to parrot's that's interesting.
Alfalfa sprouts are actualy less in protein than Butternut Squash.
Alfafa 1.32 grams per cup, Butt Sqash 1.84 grams per cup full.
