Hermanns Climbing
Hi everyone,
I know horsfields are known for their climbing but can Hermanns be the same? My new Hermanns is trying to climb on everything, the over turned plant pots in her enclosure etc. Is this her exploring her new surroundings? She's also very keen on the water bowl and regularly climbs in there. |

Hi Peter
yes Hermanns do like to climb too. But what I often find is that this kind of bahaviour settles once the tortoise has fully explored the enclosure. Its a bit like exploring the limits, and once the animal is satisifed that it knows where everythng is and where the edge of its habitat is, it accepts the situation. Though they will always make a mess of the water bowl, dragging soil in, using it as a toilet etc. They are not the tidiest of creatures!!

you need to watch for them shifting things to the side or to a corner and escaping over the top
my pair were hatching an escape plot last summer --> http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=34692 Last edited by Alan1; 13-01-2011 at 08:33 PM. |

Lily climbed a spider plant I had in the corner of his enclosure. Climbed on that, then onto his hide lid, then belly flopped down on the other side where I had all my leads, plugs and what not....
Mother found him wandering up and down not able to go anywhere...I shudder to think what could have happened. I have since removed anything in the corners and also built up the sides. xx Sometimes I think its as they can sort of see something over the other side... It becomes...the promised land, and then all attempts will be made to get there!! xx |
