This is just what I was saying about substrate this poor tortoise is for sale on that lovely site beginning with P.
Now it is not just down to being on wood chips but I'm sure it's not doing it any favours and the best bit is its in "good health" do people really think that this is good for it.

Oh thats just awful. Appears to be terrible MBD and no doubt loads of complications from that and other problems.

Yes that's really sad the person saying the tortoise is in good health. Have they no idea what a tortoise is supposed to look like?

There is absolutely no excuse for this - very sad as the poor thing has obviously had no proper life at all.

Poor guy!

You are right G there is so much info out there, you let a cat or dog get like than and it would be taken away and you would be banned from keeping animals!

Ignorance is no excuse when you let it get that bad as looking at pictures of tortoises and you know that's not right!
Sure you might get some bad advice from a pet shop but when the poor thing then starts growing deformed you would seek help!

This is why we can't stop trying to give out advice but then people still don't listen I did put out an advert just before Christmas against my better judgement and let's say of the 10 people who contacted me 3 were just being nosey 6 wanted one for a Christmas present for their child and one that knew all about tortoise needs and had all the equipment so only one was sold.

Time and time again this happens not just to me but all the other people who are lucky to get babies and put hours and hours of work into keeping the animals in their care in the best condition they possibly can and at great cost.

So it really winds me up when people get it so wrong or is it they just don't care who knows.

But on a brighter note it's nice when people have had a problem they do take advice and sort things out.

That poor tort. I completely share your frustration, G. It appalls me just knowing people buy torts and don't do any research at all. They don't care about UV, D3 and temperature gradients - that's a foreign language to them. They don't want the hassle of growing their own weeds and flowers or going out to locate safe ones to pick. They can't be bothered to identify safe weeds from non-edible ones and don't want to understand the importance of humidity and hydration. They see cute little hatchlings, want one and unfortunately there are shops all too willing to make a quick buck, give them incorrect info so they ensure repeat trade in pellets and the wrong substrate and once sold couldn't give a toss about the tort they have just sold.
Thank god for breeders like you and so many others on here who care about the hatchlings and the home they go to. If people find their way to the forum and ask questions it shows they want to do what's best and if necessary remedy any incorrect husbandry. Thankfully we have those here willing to answer queries and offer advice. It worries me when I've heard about some of the advice given on FB and I think so many go there first for convenience and take everything at face value.

There are many wonderful people I can think of who rescue torts and give them a better life. The tort in that advert looks to have such bad MBD it's hard to comprehend how someone could think that looks normal. I just hope someone with knowledge will get that tort and do whatever possible to offer the best nutrition and husbandry they can, but we all know there's nothing they can do to reverse the damage. So sad.

OMG that's awful, it amazes me that there is so much rubbish info still going around out there. And a lot of it is on FB , people don't listen to experience keepers, they just want here that their tort is cute, and " oh but the vet told me to keep it on wood pellets so that's what I'm going to do". Aaaaahhhhhhgggggrrrrr,

geez if you couldn't see which way his claws were facing you wouldn't know which end his head was.
utter laziness - looks like no UV A or B has been given and I bet the poor little thing hasn't seen the light of day outside either. I don't know what P site is but I feel like buying him just to give him a little life back. I adopted one 20 years ago fed on Chinese beans and never been outside and she was pure white and overweight. She is gorgeous today and always, CB
