whats' the thoughts behind a chip with this ? I have only ever got my dogs chipped and that's case they (he) gets lost. Is it just a way to track the Cites process? I am probably being a bit dim with the heat, or just dim...CB

Not sure how they would track tortoises this way, as you can give them away without chips:0(
I just think its a way for CITES to make money, as most of the commonly kept tortoises are not really endangered any more.

I think in theory it protects wild populations but in practice I don't think it does. You can't sell babies unless you've had the adults chipped. But you can get an adult chipped with any A10 that you have lying around. If the tortoise is more than a baby and it changes owners in the official system then it is in theory traceable.

I'm doubtful of Cites making money out of it though.

No they dont make too much money, but they have to pay their own way now, instead of the government. Hence prices going up. And the fact you can give tortoises away makes a mockery of it all.

Unless you actually register your chip it's a wast of time as if nobody has any records of it with the owners address or your tortoise can talk then it ain't getting home.
And im not sure if defra would give out your name and address.

Sorry for adding to this thread but I thought Id ask related questions. I'm applying for my hatchlings now but I'm a little confused how to fill in the form I had to do it for the adults. All adults have SSC''s

1. Where do I put the adult cert numbers?
2. Do I put anything in the top right under certificate?
3. Do I select commercial purposes
4. In section 9 do I put B or D?
5. In section 19 is it option b
6. Am I right about the fees I've had 2 Clutches in a season If I have 10 Eggs form 1 pair its £31 for initial hatchling then £1.50 for the other 9 = £44.50

Thanks in advance guys

I phoned them up and the man was really quite helpful. Sorry I can't answer your questions but phoning them might work for you.

Thank you. I spoke to them when I had to do my adults. As there were complications from the previous owner not following the law He was very helpful I must say also.
