I am really pleased over this debate as I give my 10 year olds this once a week and have been quite liberal in sprinkling it over everything. I am sure that is what it said on the pot, but I am going to double check.

I switched to nekton msa but I only do it once a week . The amount to be used is tiny. So tiny that it's impossible to dose accurately. I wish they would dilute it down to a sensible concentration.
That's the D3 plus dealt with. I'm not scientific and I'm not convinced they need it. I know I've got decent uv indoors and out.
Calcium I deal with separately. I don't sprinkle it on food as I would be giving the tortoise a hobson's choice. Go hungry or have a load of calcium it might not need. I offer cuttlefish bones and lump chalk and I trust the tort to know if they need it. One of my females won't eat it and I wish she would.
I only feed dandelions when there isn't much else. This is because of the oxalic acid which may inhibit the absorption of calcium. This effect has not been proven in reptiles but its been shown in other animal studies. For this reason I never feed the stems as try are full of sap and I am very sparing with feeding dandelion flowers. I'm not saying it's a bad food. I believe its not an ideal one so when there is heaps of other stuff I steer clear.

Phew!

Thank you for your responses, that’s all very interesting. So what I’m getting from this is, mostly, there’s no need to give much d3 for older torts that are outside all summer and hibernate. You mostly seem to just give it ( sparingly ) to hatchlings. So I think I will cut back on the d3, I do sprinkle limestone flour quite liberally on their food, most days, I don’t worry if I miss the occasional day.
Thanks all, that’s been most helpful.

I would say that as long as you haven't got a dandelion sticking out you should be ok. Though clearly if it's black tie then perhaps tone down the leather bit. Giggling at the table is such bad manners.

Take FIL to Tesco to fill up on wine and I’m sure they won’t notice, G!

Agree with Clare and Emma, the only thing I would add to that is , keep your elbows off the table and keep your mouth shut while eating, and nobody will notice !

The instructions are actually quite clear. Small pinch and blow over the food, so goodness knows where I thought I should be liberal!

I did read somewhere that using a salt cellar is a good way of providing a gentle dusting.
