welcome Charlie, how fantastic you are doing all the research and looking to get a tortoise. You may want to think about how to secure the garden with a Horsfield as they do tend to dig down a lot and under fences etc, are pretty nippy on their feet also, but are super little characters. Good luck and keep us all posted wont you. CB

Welcome to the forum Charlie.
I look forward to seeing the photos of the tortoise you are thinking of having.

Hi Charlie...and welcome from me too!
Ooo...it is so exciting to have tortoise to look after, you won't believe how much there is to do..and they do make you laugh too
I have Horsefield tortoise but as I'm newbie myself, I cannot say if they are 'best' for newbies or not...just that they can be handful at times
Looking forward hearing how you progress...

Hello and a warm welcome from me.
You say you want a bigger tortoise to roam around the garden the one I wouldn't recommend for free roaming if that's what you meant would be a horsfield they are the most amazing diggers and you would soon loose it.
If you are looking at making a pen/enclosure then I would say either a horsfield, hermans or an ibera would be fine as a first tortoise and all three will hibernate.
Where abouts are you from.

Welcome Charlie.

My Horsfields are in a pen when outside. I do let them walk around on the grass or in my vegetable patch, but I never leave them. They would be walking off if I did not stay with them.

As Gordon advises - a pen. They are also safer from other animals.

this is true Charlie ! how neat is that then ! its what I did with my Horsfields. Chicken wire all underneath. If you can share some pictures when you have your new little one that would be very nice for us all. CB
