First Candling
I have a single egg in the incubator, currently on day 5. I candled it for the first time but don't really know quite what I'm looking for. I'm assuming the dark bit at the bottom is possibly the yolk, but am not sure what the bit at the top is. It's probably too early to tell if the egg looks viable or not, but any thoughts are welcome.
The incubator is very settled at 32 degrees and the humidity is currently stable at 73%. The humidity shoots up to 80% if I put in even a small pot of water, so I removed it earlier. Is it necessary for the incubator to have water in it? Also, I don't have the eggs covered. I'm using a Herp Nursery II, so I assume this is the right thing to do? Finally, should I be weighing the egg at certain stages of development or is best to leave it well alone apart from candling? Thanks.

That bit at the top looks like the start of chalking and I think the egg looks good

YAY!!!!
Oh my, I'm so excited as I really wasn't expecting it to be. Thanks Alley and Dan. Am I okay having no water in the incubator and not having the eggs covered? Now I know it's fertile I want to ensure everything is done as perfectly as I can to ensure I do my best to help this egg progress and safely hatch. Throw as much advice at me as you like.

You don't have to cover the egg but you do need water in the incubator to keep the humidity up. Do you know what the humidity is?

Yes Dan, it's 73% without any water. I started off the first few days with a water dish in there but the humidity kept creeping up past 80%. I had the teeniest amount of water possible yet it hit 83% and so I removed the pot of water and it's been stable at 73% ever since (about 14 hours).
Shall I leave it as it is or reintroduce a water pot or a soaked sponge?

Thanks. Hubby took the photo while I held the torch. I'd come in from an evening at a friend's and decided to candle the egg at about 1am, turfing him out of bed to help me!!
