Default How I built my greenhouse base

This is how I have built my greenhouse base so I could utilise drop hatch doors should I need to close it off at times as when we are winding down prehibernation for example. I have used sleepers which are held together by screwing down lengths of decking but leaving gaps in the sleepers for hatched doorways. It is much cheaper to use concrete blocks as I have done in the past but not everyone can lay blocks so I thought I would use sleepers for this house which I hope may help anyone else getting a greenhouse for their tortoises. These sleepers are 9" high the same as concrete blocks. This is high enough for most Med tortoises but you would need 2 courses (layers) as I have done in the past with concrete blocks should you keep Leopard tortoises.

Great, love this idea, thanks very much. Did you then fill it in with top soil?

No I wanted to keep the same level as the outside it help to retain moisture in the soil for nesting plus keeps access to the outside simple. Built a similar thing with blocks for my Leopards only 18 foot long and mounted a ten foot greenhouse back to back with an 8 foot shed.they had separate entrances in both and connecting . Strangely once warmed up they would head outside into natural sunlight hardly using the greenhouse at all.this would have been in the late nineties a couple of year after I purchased my first leopard hatchling from the UK.

Do you find that the housing retains heat ok? I am considering having the ground open in the same way but worried about losing too much heat?

Thats some nice work there Terry. Just did similar on a smaller scale for some of my young Hermanns.

Needs a bit of landscaping, bit green at the moment.

Yeah, the mesh rolls back and the door slides so I can get in if I need to.
