Eggshell, Jan. Sorry, that was probably confusing. Did you think I was referring to Pickle's shell?
Little Pickle needed a helping hand hatching and Suze trusted her instincts and probably saved little Pickle's life.

As Emma has said, I decided to help her out of her egg, she was late and I could see something wasn't right as the inner membrane wasn't pulling away properly. It's not something you really want to do lightly, but after a lot of thought and discussion I had to make a decision , so I decided to get her out, it was very scary, but in the end it was the right decision, because she was vacuumed packed in the very sticky gloop ! Unfortunately she was sitting on a very larg yoke sac ( not ideal) which I had to keep her on and very still for a few more days 😰 that was last July. I know it's not what everyone would do, but that was my decision.

We were all holding our breath ! Pickle has a special place at SW !

good photos in showing differences, i'm not sure it would be obvious, especially when new to TK which is why knowing about dehydration and humidity is so important. I remember the days when all I had was the Tortoise Trust Newsletter to wait for and learn from. Thank goodness for SW and all its contributors and views. CB

Silly me! Long tiring day at work and I was thinking Pickle's shell...... Of course in the cold light of day I realise what on earth was I thinking. I had thought there must have been some sort of surgical procedure.

It was a brave decision and obviously the right one for dear Pickle.

We have chickens and only once did I see an egg with a small broken piece of the egg shell, so left well alone. The hole was far too small and I had to be firm with myself.

This is useful for me to prepare myself if my 3 incubating eggs are fertilized and what may happen.
