Just a quick question is it ok to have a stone under the heat lamp ????

You can surround the basking spot with stones, lots of people do this. I am not sure about hulking great massive things...but sort of pebble type size.

So its a yes...and a...see what others say, type of answer Judith!

I say don't as the surface of stone/slate etc can get very hot, I prefer just the normal substrate ie soil/sand etc obviously nothing combustable, in fact I don't like to have anything however small that the tort can climb/fall/get stuck on/in under the heat lamp.

Let the tortoise tell you. If the tortoise uses it to bask... it's acceptable... if not... it's not acceptable. It has to do with the height of the lamp and the wattage of the bulb.

I have a larger stone to the side of the heatlamp rather than directly under it and my torts love to sit and bask on it. I have just small pebbles under the lamp to help my torts right themselves if needed. They don't get boiling hot and are semi-sunk in the substrate.

i like a piece of slate or a flat stone directly under the basking lamp.if your basking lamp is to close the stone/slate will overheat ,of course so will your tortoises.so raise the lamp.i find using a slate in my hatchlings table they tend to bury themselves under the slate where it is warm and moist at night.and when i turn the basking lamp on in the morning they appear looking for breakfast.this of course helps to prevent the substrate/soil from drying out .

They do go staight on there in the morning before it heats up too much but then go to the side .They are out in the day for the remainder of the summer but am just a little worried when they are in more .As you say i will have to watch their body language cause i took the stone away and they do not like basking on the soil . Thanks for advice Judy
