[QUOTE=EJ;475061]One of the leading tortoise vets in the world... Pioneer of endoscopic sexing of tortoises... Google Dr. Steven Divers and see what you come up with... This is the person who came up with the idea.

Makes no difference to me what anyone else says or does. I do think it is important to present new ideas and explain why those new ideas might be better. Hopefully other keepers will give it a little thought.

Just think of this... what if keepers were still feeding tinned dog/cat food and tethering their tortoises to the tree... because we've always done it that way.[/QUOTE
just think of this ....what if all keepers where feeding pellets as a complete diet ( which is impossible ) instead of feeding a fresh plants diet

Apologies if you've mentioned it elsewhere ed but why is there more chance of the chip migrating in the rear leg than in the front? (genuinely interested)

As far as I can tell the chips we use have only been around 30 years total. I'd also be willing to bet that the frequency and technology has changed quite a few times over that period making it necessary to use a different reader for each change.

Oh... I love the idea... 'we've been doing it that way forever... why change it'.
At the recent presentation by Sharon Redrobe given at the BCG spring symposium, she mentioned as I recall that micro chip had been recovered in the bladder of a Med Tortoise. Lord only knows, how it got there?
I hope, individual keepers do take account that in the UK the administration of such a device is an invasive procedure and should be done by Veterinary qualified practitioner

Just think... what if they were... which is entirely possible... once again... I like to try and think outside of the box.

There is more solid muscle in the forelimb than in the rear leg.

Now that you mention it... it is actually the law that states such procedures be done by a qualified vet.

Ta that makes sense to me now. I wonder if it was thought the back leg was best because it's usually more hidden/protected and now after years of being available and in practice it's been proven to migrate more

I believe the back leg was chosen because the flesh is more loose and easier to insert the chip.
