light intensity is important , the lux level's are far lower than summer month's , to help with this i use sad tubes which give out a high intensity light

I havent used those -the 'sad tubes', do they have a full spectrum aspect to them??
What do 'lux levels' mean ? |

lux= brightness of light, ie: living room 50 lux
full daylight ( not direct sun ) 10,000 to 25,000 lux full sunlight 32,000 to 130,000 lux. using my lux meter one sad tube gives out around 10,000 lux a light bulb around 100 lux

So its full spectrum then? As in, it benefits their sight??? It promotes better vision???
I guess I use the reptile bulbs as I suppose I tend to trust what it says it can do rather than use other forms that perhaps give out just normal light. Probably just as good........ I dont know...thats why I ask. I only knew the word 'lux' ......as a form of soap.... xx |

lux is a measurement of light intensity in a nut shell

Thanks. How does one measure that in a normal strip bulb?
If someone were shopping to find one - what would make that bulb stand out from the rest, I mean as in - make it different from a household strip in a kitchen??? ((I did really think lux was a soap...like, scrub a dub dub?? lol...sorry I guess if I feel like a new owner as I wouldnt know to look for a Lux capacitor or capacity...(now I sound like the doc in Back to the Future!) )) |

In the tropics the light intensity of the sun at ground level is in the region of 1,000,000 Lux, while even in the rainforest canopy it can exceed 7,000 Lux. By comparison, a 40W incandescent lamp typically produces less than 50 Lux when measured at a distance of only 1 meter! This demonstrates very clearly just how very "dim" even the best illuminated terrarium is compared to nature.

Very informative. Thank you for the statistics.
Any man made indoor housing isnt going to compare. Neither would any other aspect of human interaction with tortoise keeping - compared to their life in the wild. None of it is going to be like for like. I wonder what readings would be on a cloudy or dull day...I would imagine these countries of origin would still have those odd days? Plus, our weather or light quality is never going to be comparable to those areas - same as things like weed growth, soil density, soil quality, types of plants found in the region. The strips I like to use - I use for their full spectrum capability, as well as their light quality. Not to say the others on the market arent any good. As in, simple household bulbs, but their output maybe is mainly for human sight, maybe..rather than benefitting a tort. Good Luxx...xx Last edited by yuna1971; 18-12-2011 at 11:12 AM. |
