Default Yearly worm counts

I " rescued " my 6yr old Sulcata Fluffy aug this year and she has been progressing well .While i was doing my annual worm count for my horse i asked if they did Torts, and as they did took in a poo sample .Well they phoned me this morning with the result and it appears she has a very heavy worm burden.Just shows that we dont know whats going on inside .I will do this again now next year and it will be interesting to see the results :-How often do you check for worms And do you think i should test the littlies .They weigh 97 and 102 g and are 14months old

I took in a tortoise that was found wandering in a street this year and decided I would worm him as he has been a bit off colour, well he produced so many worms that I couldn't believe it!! there were literally more worms than poo and I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes some were still alive when they came out too which surprised me!

I get a test done each year and most years I have to worm the tortoises. The worm eggs can survive in the soil outdoors over winter. So unless we move our outside enclosures around (which I couldn't do even if I wanted) the animals can become re-infected each year. If your smaller tortoises occupy the same space as Fluffy I think it would be advisable to get a sample checked.

The worms my tortoises get are very small indeed. Some species are tiny and only visible under a microscope.

When I got mine they were riddled with worms. It took two treatments to clear. My vet told me to re-check in 6 months.
